How to protect RFIDs in your wallet

This article will not discuss in detail what Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) does. It will however cover how to protect/block the RFIDs that you have.

RFID are commonly found in "smart cards", and now some passports. The smart card may even be a credit card. These items contain both personal and financial information that could be read from a distance using a RFID scanner.

What can be done?

The RFID can be blocked or hindered using simple methods. Blocking the entire signal may not be possible, or needed since the range of the RFID can be significantly reduced. Many people are enclosing their cards and passports in items that absorb or reflect the RFID. This can be done using metal or water. In these cases, water is impractical.

One method is to use common foil to create a shroud your items that contain RFIDs. When stored, these items will not be able to be tracked, but can be removed from the shroud when necessary.

Another method is to buy a commercially available RFID blocking wallet. These can be found by searching on the internet.
