Beginner's guide to GPS devices

First things first gps stands for global positioning satellite. It is a system that can pin point your position and can guide you to a location. It uses multiple satellites which signals are picked up by whichever gps device you are using.By comparing where the signals are coming from in relation to others the device works out where it is.Most systems can make a calculation from 3 satellites but many will use more for a more accurate result.Basic systems will work out your location to within a few meters whilst more complicated systems are more accurate still.

The more basic systems are used for cars and for walkers who want basic navigation, the more complicated systems are used in planes, boats and even missiles. When you see war footage of bombs enetring buildings through chimneys or windows then gps is often used. The advantage with the missiles is that when launched from a long distance the gps system can be used to set the route and to keep the missile on track,it even allows the missile to take a route avoiding towns and even mountains in the route.
While the basic systems are usefull they do have flaws if not used carefully. Some car systems when asked for the most direct route often include dirt tracks and routes not suitable for vehicles at all.The hand held systems walkers use are great for planning and walking a route except not all of them can work out height or depth therefore can guide you off a cliff or via a steep climb. Its a visible with walking to learn to map read accuratly and to use the gps as back up.It is a usefull gadget in emergency though as you can give very accurate information to any emergency services.
The main drawback with the system is that the unit you are using must be to connect to the signal from the satellite and therefore can be used under cover and even in bad weather. The systems despite flaws can be found in most cars these days along with the other uses i have mentioned and are often very userfull but work best along side other things as back up. Especially in cars as the system in your car wont know about road changes or new roads unless updated and can therefore try and send you up a one way street the wrong way, always watch the road for signs and warnings and don't always rely on the gps.
The future for the systems includes automatic car steering, car collosion prevention and for improved tyrack devices such as those used by secrity delivery vehicles which can be tracked if they go off route.
